OUR HISTORY
In 1981, Tulay sa Pag-unlad Inc. emerged as the Philippines' first micro-enterprise development organization, established by a collective of Christian businessmen from Opportunity International, Maranatha Trust, and the local community. TSPI extended its reach by establishing provincial partners across key cities, dedicated to enhancing the lives of underprivileged Filipinos through micro-enterprise development and community welfare initiatives.
However, by 1989, TSPI faced a challenge when international financial aid ceased. Driven by their unwavering commitment to continue aiding the impoverished, Executive Directors and Board members of various microfinance NGOs—including Taytay sa Kauswagan Incorporated (TSKI), Kabalikat para sa Maunlad na Buhay, Inc. (KMBI), Alalay sa Kaunlaran Inc. (ASKI), and others—came together, seeking guidance from God through prayer for their next steps.
Despite limited resources and their status as fledgling organizations, they joined forces to establish the Alliance of Philippine Partners in Enterprise Development Inc. (APPEND) in February 1991. This marked a pioneering coalition of micro-enterprise development non-government organizations in the Philippines. Their vision was to unify as a cohesive entity, leveraging collective strength to enhance technical capacity, leadership quality, innovations, community services, and resource mobilization strategies. Through the exchange of best practices and a unified leadership approach, they aimed for a more impactful outreach under the banner of APPEND, striving to improve the lives of those in need.
